Loudoun’s newest farm brewery is slated to open this month in Hillsboro.

Harvest Gap Brewery, located at the corner of Purcellville Road and Route 9, will take over the space previously used as the Virts Family Farm market. It joins a network of about 30 other breweries in Loudoun County.

The 20,000-square-foot building has been revamped and the owners have added a new stone patio to provide outdoor seating with views of the Short Hill Mountains.

The project is being led by Mike Virts, whose family lives at the cattle farm next door. His parents, Linda and Dennis Virts, spearheaded the Virts Family Farm market along with his uncle, Don Virts.

“We decided to take over the market and turn it into a brewery. We’ll have a farm market as well, and we will be looking to add wine and hard cider down the road,” Mike Virts said.

Virts hired William Jones as brewmaster. Jones lives in Purcellville and previously worked at a farm brewery in Culpeper before joining the Harvest Gap team.

Jones is brewing “all types of beer” with at least 10 available on tap. He said he’s using products from the family’s farm, including barley, to make the beer.

The brewery will have a space where it sells ice cream, root beer and beef from Virts’s farm.

Also opening at Harvest Gap this fall is a corn maze, which has been designed with the brewery’s farm theme. Virts said he is waiting for one more inspection to be finalized and then the brewery will be ready to open.
