UNDATED (AP) — Week 6 of the college football season features a top-five matchup in the Big Ten, with No. 4 Penn State at No. 3 Iowa, and the Big 12’s biggest rivalry. No. 6 Oklahoma and No. 21 Texas play their annual game at the Texas State Fair in Dallas. Also, one of the longest losing streaks in major college football is guaranteed to end when UConn, losers of 10 straight, faces UMass, which has lost 16 in a row.

UNDATED (AP) — Virginia Tech hosts No. 14 Notre Dame to headline the Atlantic Coast Conference schedule this week. The Hokies have won all three of their home games and are in the middle of a four-game homestand. Notre Dame is back to football independence this year after a one-year stint as a full-time ACC member last season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The week’s slate includes a notable QB matchup between Virginia’s Brennan Armstrong and Louisville’s Malik Cunningham. In addition, No. 19 Wake Forest is trying for its first 6-0 start since before the ACC was formed.

UNDATED (AP) — Nineteenth-ranked Wake Forest visits Syracuse on Saturday aiming to stretch its season-opening win streak to six games. The Orange are coming off a disheartening loss at Florida State in a game decided by a 34-yard field goal as time expired. Demon Deacons quarterback Sam Hartman ranks sixth in the Atlantic Coast Conference in total offense, averaging 293.5 yards per game. Dual-threat quarterback Garrett Shrader is slated to make his third straight start for the Orange. Shrader rushed for a career-high 137 yards and three TDs and threw for another score in the 33-30 loss to the Seminoles. 

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Louisville’s offensive numbers suggest it can hang with Virginia in their Atlantic Coast Conference football matchup this weekend. The Cardinals’ defense is another story. Louisville’s gaudy stats weren’t enough to beat Wake Forest, so the Cardinals are striving for defensive improvement to slow down the Cavaliers. The ACC meeting features two of the league’s top five offenses and their dynamic quarterbacks: Louisville’s Malik Cunningham and Virginia’s Brennan Armstrong. Louisville rang up 522 yards at Wake Forest but lost 38-35 after being unable to stop the Demon Deacons’ high-octane offense. Virginia returns from a nine-day break since escaping 30-28 at Miami.

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — Duke hosts Georgia Tech this week in an Atlantic Coast Conference football matchup. The Blue Devils and Yellow Jackets are in similar position. They appeared to have momentum entering October after wins by double-digit margins. But the Blue Devils lost to rival North Carolina while the Yellow Jackets lost to Pittsburgh. Georgia Tech has gotten some big outputs from quarterback Jeff Sims since his return from an injury suffered in the season opener. Duke’s offense still relies on the legs of Mataeo Durant. Heading into Saturday’s matchup Durant ranks as one of the nation’s top rushers by averaging 127.2 yards per game.

UNDATED (AP) — North Carolina hosts Florida State this week in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Tar Heels Saturday are looking to stay hot at home. They have won all three of their games at Kenan Stadium. They have also averaged more than 200 yards per game at home than they have in their road losses at Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech. FSU is coming off beating Syracuse on a field goal for its first win. The Seminoles have lost all five of their road games under second-year coach Mike Norvell. UNC coach Mack Brown has lost all 10 of his meetings against FSU.

UNDATED (AP) — College Football Playoff playoff expansion has stalled. Instead of getting a 12-team model across the finish line last week, the CFP management committee went back to considering the pros and cons of doubling the playoff format to eight teams. The Associated Press spoke with several people involved with expansion discussions. It is clear that a 12-team playoff is still the most likely outcome when the event expands. The big question is when, though there are many other details to work through. Discussons are expected to continue through the season and into the fall.
