The West Ottawa girls cross country team finished third overall at the Portage Invite, and Arianne Olson was the Division 1 winner.

West Ottawa scored a 140 to finish third in Division 1 behind Ann Arbor Pioneer (62) and Saline (133). Zeeland West was 13th (400) and Holland was 27th (731) in the 35-team division.

Olson won the race in 17:12.8, while teammate Helen Sachs was third in 17:26.1. Abby Bonnema finished 14th (18:45.0) and Megan Postma was 51st (19:52.2).

Zeeland West’s Jordyn Klaasen was 24th (19:07.4) and Bella Hoffer was 39th (19:36.8).

In the Division 1 boys race, Zeeland West was 20th (542), Holland was 31st (780) and West Ottawa was 32nd (804) in the 38-team division. Hilliard Davidson won with 101.

Zeeland West’s Chase Holwerda was 58th (16:43.1). Holland’s Adrian Castillo was 61st (16:45.9).

The Zeeland East girls finished ninth in the Division 2 race with 367. East Grand Rapids won with 88. Holland Christian was 24th (618) in the 45-team event.

Zeeland East’s Allison Kuzma was 12th (19:24.6). Holland Christian’s Sarah Schloff was 44th (20:29.2).

In the Division 2 boys race, Holland Christian was 16th (513)0 and Zeeland East was 18th (538). Grand Rapids Christian won with 121.

Zeeland East’s Caden Meyer was sixth in 16:00.0, Gavin Wiersma was 36th (16:56.6) and Nick Riemersma was 54th (17:16.1). Holland Christian’s Parker Lambers was 16th (16:27.1).

The Saugatuck boys finished eighth in Division 3 with 286. Traverse City St. Francis won with 95. Black River was 13th (327).

Saugatuck’s Adam Martinson finished 10th (16:45.4) and Tristan Ashley was 35th (17:41.2). Black River’s Nolan Meier was 24th (17:29.8).

The Saugatuck girls finished 15th in Division 3 with 468. Hart won with 83. Black River was 25th (598).

Black River’s Lily Laburn was 31st (20:40.1). Saugatuck’s Hannah Smit was 47th (21:21.3) and Samantha Sixberry was 50th (21:24.0).

VOLLEYBALL

Zeeland East goes 3-1

The Zeeland East volleyball team defeated Spring Lake 25-25, 25-27, 15-9, Calvin Christian 25-14, 25-14 and Mona Shores 25-22, 25-21 before losing 25-15, 25-15 to Hudsonville in the semifinals of the gold bacracket at the Best of the West Tournament on Saturday.

Katie Carlson had 25 kills, while Elly Hart had 23 and Reilly Zegunis had 20. Zegunis also had 15 blocks.

Grace Steenwyk had 86 assists, 26 digs, four blocks and six kills.

Hayley Jones had 29 digs, Carlson had 25 and Ashlyn Mendelsohn had 22. Carlson served fine aces.

Zeeland West goes 1-2-1

The Zeeland West volleyball team competed in the Jenison tournament on Saturday. In pool play the Dux defeated Portage Northern (27-25, 25-23), lost to Grandville (23-25, 15-25), and split with Holland Christian (17-25, 25-22). In bracket play the Dux lost to Morley Stanwood (23-25, 21-25).

Abby Winn led the Dux with 21 kills, while Lindy Gulker had 16, Nevaeh Bakker had 15, Alayna Ruch had 12 and Abby Nash had 10.

Lindsey House had 57 assists, 17 digs, six blocks and seven kills. Ally Yonker had 32 digs. Winn and Lexi Rindfliesch each had 16 digs and Gulker had 10. Bakker had five blocks.
