High school sports rewind: Zeeland East volleyball advances to title match

The Zeeland East volleyball team advanced to the championship match of the OK Green Conference tournament with a 25-18, 21-25, 25-21, 25-18 win over Mona Shores on Monday.

Reilly Zegunis had 18 kills to lead the Chix, while Katie Carlson had 12 and Elly Hart added seven. Hart had eight blocks and Zegunis had three.

Grace Steenwyk directed the offense with 48 assists  and also had 17 digs. Carlson had 21 digs, Kiria Elenbaas had 14 and Hayley Jones had 12. Elenbaas served five aces.

The OK Green championship match will be Tuesday with Zeeland East hosting Zeeland West in a rematch of a five-set thriller during the regular season.

BOYS SOCCER

West Ottawa 1, Jenison 0

The West Ottawa boys soccer team defeated Jenison 1-0 in the Division 1 district semifinals.

The Panthers will face Grand Haven on Thursday in the district finals.

Black River 5, Saugatuck 0

In district semifinals at Bloomingdale High School, Black River defeated Saugatuck 5-0.

Gavin Sligh had three goals. RJ Villegas and Julian Fowler each scored a goal. Drew Sotok had two assists, Marco Pepi and Ty Elmer had an assist apiece. Hudson Hilgert notched his seventh shutout of the season.

Black River will take on Bloomingdale in the district finals at 6 p.m. Thursday at Bloomingdale High School.

CROSS COUNTRY

Black River boys 3rd in Alliance league

The Black River boys finished third at the Alliance League Championship with 66 points, Grand Rapids Aviation won with 47 points.

Nolan Meier and Roger Hernandez finished third  (17:32) and fifth (18:02), respectively, achieving all-conference honors.

Also placing for the team were Matthew Koeman (16th 19:10), Caleb Ewald (17th 19:17) and Owen Stimer (32nd 20:15).

Lily Laburn finished 10th for the girls earning all-conference honorable mention. 

VOLLEYBALL

Saugatuck 3, Coloma 0

The Trailblazers won 25-18, 25-22, 25-15 over Coloma.

Aerin Baker had 13 kills, seven digs, two aces and two blocks on senior night. Dana Crough had 21 assists and seven digs. Catherine Pond added five kills and eight digs, while McKenzie Pearson had five kills and Alyssa Dies had seven digs.

Saugatuck improved to 22-5-3.

“It was senior night at Saugatuck High where all the senior players were recognized with their parents and tributes were read by the underclassmen in appreciation of the seniors’ efforts. Lots of tears and hugs as each one of them enjoyed their last home conference match,” Saugatuck coach Ross Such said.
