High school sports rewind: Zeeland East volleyball sweeps GR Union in opening round of conference tournament

The Chix hosted GR Union Tuesday night in the first round of conference tournament play and won in straight sets with scores of  25-6, 25-10, 25-14.

Grace Steenwyk, Elly Hart and Macey Smith all had four aces. 

Reilly Zegunis led the team with nine kills, while Katie Carlson added five. Hart added two blocks while Maddie Schuur and Selah Huizenga both had one. Steenwyk had 31 assists from her setter spot and Hayley Jones and Petra DeBoer each had nine digs, while Kiria Elenbaas had eight. 

VOLLEYBALL

Holland Christian 3, Fruitport 1

The Maroons opened up OK Blue conference play with a 3-1 win over Fruitport, with the scores being 25-20, 25-17, 19-25, 25-19. 

Kierea Smits led in kills with 13, Avery Huisman had 10 and Sophia Pierce had eight. Pierce also had 4 blocks. Dilyn Duryee had 25 digs, and Ellie DeVries had 21.

Huisman, Duryee, and Erica Mulder had three aces each. DeVries had 41 assists.  

Zeeland West 3, Wyoming 0

The Dux defeated Wyoming in the first round of the OK Green conference tournament (25-5, 27-25, 25-11). 

Abby Winn led the team with 11 kills, Hana Hescott had eight while Alayna Ruch added seven more.  Setter Lindsey Houle had 30 assists. Rylee Terpstra, Ally Yonker, Tia Martinez, Lindey Houle each had four digs while  Winn and Lexi Rindfliesch added three. 

Alaya Ruch, Abby Nash each had two blocks. Winn also had three aces on the night.  Lindsey Houle led the team with four aces and Hana Hescott had two more. 

Coloma 3, Fennville 2

Fennville played five sets in a tough loss at Coloma, with scores of 13-25, 25-22, 18-25, 25-22 and 8-15.

Calyssa Howard played stellar volleyball on every play all night grabbing 15 assists, three aces,  eight digs, a kill and two blocks. She was complemented by Mackenzie Dalton with her four kills, two aces and six digs.

CROSS COUNTRY

Hamilton boys take second at Wayland Invite, girls finish third

The Hawkeyes boys and girls cross country teams competed at the Wayland Invitational on Tuesday. The boys earned a second-place finish with 47 points, while the girls finished third with 57 points. 

For the boys, Max VanHuis finished the race in first place with a time of 17:33.34 and right behind him in second was Abatu Dykstra, finishing in 17:42.82. Ella Schwartz was the lone girl to finish in the top 10, she crossed the line in 22:28.35. 

Though they didn’t compete as a team, Fennville’s Angelica Mendoza finished the race in fourth place, with a time of 22:04.00.
