Hultberg Scores Twice To Lead Frewsburg Past Southwestern

FREWSBURG — As Southwestern coach Derek Houser put it Friday night, the Frewsburg girls soccer team “has never seen a shot they didn’t like.”

That shoot-first mentality carried the Bears to success in a season-opening victory over the Trojans on Senior Night under the lights at the Frewsburg football field.

Sophomore Alex Hultberg scored twice while junior Kendal Sohl and sophomore Ashlyn Samuelson each chipped in a goal as Frewsburg, the defending Section VI Class C champion, defeated Southwestern, 4-2.

The Bears came out flying to the ball in the first half, but the Trojans weathered the storm for a while.

With 17:32 remaining in the half, just minutes after Southwestern freshman keeper Reece Beaver made a diving save to keep the game scoreless, Samuelson broke through for Frewsburg. After taking a pass from junior Makenna McBride wide outside of the 18-yard box, Samuelson unleased a shot that found its way into the far corner of the net for a 1-0 lead.

The Trojans’ best first-half opportunity came with 8:30 showing on the block, but Bears senior keeper Madison Voty deflected a free kick over the goal to keep her shutout intact.

After halftime, both teams began to take advantage of their offensive opportunities.

First, Sohl took a pass from junior Peyton Yost and streaked down the sideline. As she neared the corner of the pitch, from a nearly impossible angle, she struck a shot into the far top corner of the goal for a 2-0 lead just under six minutes into the half.

Southwestern got on the board less than eight minutes later. A free kick glanced off the crossbar and the rebound eventually found the foot of junior Brynne Conley, who deposited the ball into the net to cut the Trojans’ deficit to one. Junior Melissa DeVore was credited with the assist on the play.

But Frewsburg made sure to push its lead back to two less than seven minutes later as Hultberg took a pass from sophomore Jacey Cappa, streaked down the right side of the field and then shot across the grain with her right foot just inside the far post to make it 3-1.

Just over six minutes later, a Bears’ misplay in the 18-yard box ended up on the foot of Southwestern freshman Sophia Segrue, who chipped a shot past Voty to make it a 3-2 game.

But again, the Bears didn’t rest on their one-goal lead. This time, they were awarded a corner kick with less than 11 minutes to play. Hultberg and Sohl decided to play a short corner and left unchecked, Hultberg again found the top corner of the goal, this time with her left foot, to make it a 4-1 game.

Frewsburg’s defense stood tall from there, led by Yost and fellow junior Reagan Chitester. After two seniors graduated last year, the Bears have added Cappa and junior Rachael Kerhli to the defensive mix. Sophomore Lizzie Schrecengost also subbed in and provided valuable minutes.

And when Voty was forced to stand tall, she did. Despite the Bears posting double-digit shutouts a season ago, Voty may have never had a more impactful game than she did Friday night with a career-high 15 saves.

Beaver, attempting to fill the big shoes of a graduating Hanna Johnson at the other end of the field, was equally impressive with 14 saves in her first varsity start.
