Miah Michaelsen is the new executive director of the Indiana Arts Commission. She follows Lewis Ricci, who retired after serving in the role for 15 years. She was selected after a search process led by a seven-member committee with artists, arts organizations and commissioners, according to a release from the agency.

Michaelsen has been involved with the state agency for more than 10 years. She has been a regional arts partner for the city of Bloomington and Bloomington Area Arts Council, and she also has been the agency’s deputy director of operations since 2016.

Before coming to the commission, Michaelsen was the first assistant economic development director for the arts for Bloomington, where she worked on programming and services for the city’s creative sector. She also took leadership roles at the Bloomington Area Arts Council, the Children’s Hands-On Museum in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and the Kentuck Art Center and Festival in Northport, Alabama.

Michaelsen also has been on panels for the National Endowment for the Arts and Arts Council of Indianapolis, among others.

She received her bachelor’s degree from Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas. She lives in Bloomington with her husband and has two sons.
