INDIANA SCHOOL BOARD TO MOVE ON WITH FALL SPORTS, APPROVES HIRES, REVISIONS TO DISCIPLINE HANDBOOK

The Indiana school board met Monday evening to discuss hires for multiple positions within the district, along with the approval of revisions made to the district’s attendance, behavioral guidelines and discipline policy handbook. During the meeting, the board voted to move ahead with fall sports as planned, with plans to monitor health and safety guidelines as the season moves on.

Superintendent Michael Vuckovich talked about tobacco infractions, detailing his revision for SAP and agency referrals and the idea that these disciplinary actions are not meant as a form of punishment, but as a method of taking the appropriate steps to prevent future violations.

Vuckovich later referenced a piece of legislation that made tobacco products, including vaping devices, illegal on school grounds. He mentioned a discussion with District Judge Guy Haberl concerning creating alternative programs that are used as a platform to prevent future infractions, as well as a valid way of expunging written citations for tobacco-related offenses upon completion. One of those programs is Smokeless Saturday.

The district also passed several motions related to the hiring of an Assistant Business Manager, Support Staff and seven long-term substitute teachers. Vuckovich says the reason for the high amount of substitute hires is to ensure the district can operate on a five-day basis.

Other motions passed were the approvals of the Dunkel Roofing Company to complete roof repairs on East Pike Elementary School, additional time for elementary para-educators and the extra pay/extra duty assignment of girls’ soccer assistant coach, Tamara Collazzo.

The board’s next regular meeting is scheduled for September 14th at 7 p.m., and the Academic Committee will meet next Monday at 7 p.m.
