The Global Forest Expert Panels (GFEP) Programme of the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO) issued a report, which identifies the well being advantages of forests. Titled, ‘Forests and Trees for Human Health: Pathways, Impacts, Challenges and Response Options,’ the report acknowledges the linkages between human well being, the well being of different species, and the well being of the planet as an entire, and argues they provide options to world crises.

The Earth Negotiations Bulletin (ENB) summary of the launch event highlights that “[f]orests, trees, and green spaces play a vital role in ensuring a healthy life for all on a global scale,” with the well being advantages that vary from bodily and psychological well-being to total mortality discount far outweighing the opposed results on well being.

Emphasizing the necessity for built-in approaches, mirrored within the Global Biodiversity Framework and several other SDGs, Christoph Wildburger, IUFRO-GFEP Programme Coordinator, mentioned the report represents “the most comprehensive global assessment to date on the links between forests and human health.”

Cecil Konijnendijk, University of British Columbia and Chair of the Global Forest Expert Panel on Forests and Human Health, outlined the report’s 5 key messages:

  • Forests, bushes, and inexperienced areas influence human well being throughout all life phases.
  • Positive well being outcomes of forests, bushes, and inexperienced areas considerably outweigh unfavourable ones.
  • The well being final result of forests is the results of a number of pathways which can be depending on context and particular person existence.
  • Forest-health relations supply options to world crises.
  • Integrative and cross-sectoral approaches must be adopted to enhance forest-health linkages.

Matilda van den Bosch, Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal), Coordinating Lead Author, highlighted “global inequities regarding health outcomes and interactions with forests.” She recognized environmental safety as “an inherent part of the solution to health,” and referred to as consideration to “the voices of Indigenous Peoples and local communities and the needs of future generations.”

Payam Dadvand, ISGlobal, Coordinating Lead Author, outlined the big selection of well being advantages related to forests and bushes, together with: neurodevelopment in kids; psychological well being and wellbeing, non secular well-being, and cardiometabolic well being in adults; and psychological well being and wellbeing and longevity within the aged.

Cristina Romanelli, Programme Officer, Biodiversity, Climate Change and Health, World Health Organization (WHO), “lauded the report for catalyzing collective knowledge to prevent disease and create health-promoting environments through inclusive approaches.” Noting alternatives supplied by the One Health method, she harassed the necessity for “policy coherence and collaboration between the health and natural resource sectors.”

The report was developed by a world and interdisciplinary crew of scientists. The on-line launch occurred on 21 March 2023, on the event of the International Day of Forests. [Publication: Forests and Trees for Human Health: Pathways, Impacts, Challenges and Response Options] [ENB Coverage of Launch Event]
