Varanasi: To encourage rural youths for sports and provide them a platform of equal opportunity, a mega event ‘Khelo Banaras-2021’ will be hosted by all 694 gram panchayats of the district from October 21. Qualified youths in different events will participate in the event at block and district level.
Launching the website of the event- http://khelobanaras2021.org- the chief development officer Abhishek Goyal said that the youths interested in athletics and wrestling events can get themselves registered for the mega sports events on this website. The website has been developed by incorporating youth welfare, basic education, secondary education, panchayati raj and sport departments. Each village of the district is going to host this event to give equal opportunity to youths of rural belt.
Apart from sprint events in 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m and 3000m categories, events including hammer throw, javelin, discus throw, long and high jump will be organised in athletics, said Goyal adding that the village panchayat level events will be held on October 21. The wrestling contests for women and men will be held in five weight categories each while volleyball, kabaddi and kho-kho events will also be organised in each nyaya panchayat, he said. Winners of gram panchayat level events will compete at 108 nyaya panchayat level on October 23 to qualify for block level competitions, he added.
The qualified youths in these sports categories will compete at block level on October 25, said Goyal. The weightlifting event will be added in the competition at block level, he said adding that the youths qualified for final rounds will take part at district level contest on October 29 and 30, he added.
All events at each level will take place in under-16 and over-16 age groups. As per the calculation of the officials following village panchayat rounds 30,536 winners are expected to qualify for nyaya panchayat level events while 13,392 are expected to qualify for block level rounds. Goyal said that 1,536 rural youths in individuals and team categories are likely to qualify for district level events in which each contest will take place for first, second and third prizes. Goyal said that prizes will be distributed among 428 winners at district level.
