GALESBURG VOLLEYBALL
Streaks swept by Chargers
GALESBURG — The Galesburg High School volleyball team fell 25-23, 25-18 to Orion on Wednesday evening at John Thiel Gym.
Abby Lingafelter and Capre Ferguson had seven kills each for the Silver Streaks. Lingafelter also had two blocks. Juniper Schwartzman also had a block. Grace Nelson had nine assists for Galesburg, and Avery Wolfe had 13 digs and an ace for the Streaks.
Galesburg’s sophomores fell to the Chargers 25-23, 25-23 while the Streaks’ freshmen beat Orion 25-20, 25-16.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Knox beats Monmouth 1-0
MONMOUTH — The Knox College women’s soccer team downed Monmouth College 1-0 on Wednesday afternoon.
The Fighting Scots allowed a goal just 41 seconds into the game and the Prairie Fire made it stand up.
Monmouth close to tying the game in the final minutes with a shot that hit off the crossbar but the Scots were unable to tie the game as the rain started to fall.
Knox took the opening kick right down the field and went on top in under a minute. Lydia Mitchell’s shot on the breakaway beat freshman goalkeeper Lea Selquist at the 41 seconds mark.
MEN’S SOCCER
Fire fall in Wisconsin
PLATTEVILLE, Wis. — The Knox College men’s soccer team fell to the University of Wisconsin-Platteville 3-0 on Wednesday afternoon.
The Pioneers scored two goals in quick succession midway through the first half to take a 2-0 lead into halftime. Platteville outshot Knox 14-3 in the first half.
The Pioneers added another goal in the 66th minute to take a commanding lead, but the shot differential was a much closer 6-3 in favor of Platteville in the second half.
Overall, the Pioneers held a 15-5 advantage in shots on goal. Martin Garcia tallied three shots on goal, while Luis Silva added two.
WOMEN’S GOLF
Trio of Chargers make All-Region Team
GALESBURG — The Carl Sandburg College women’s golf team had three players earn all-region honors and finished one stroke out of first place in the inaugural Region IV Division I tournament, which took place Tuesday and Wednesday at Lake Bracken.
The Chargers shot 435 on Tuesday and 431 in Wednesday’s final round to total an 866 for the tournament. Kishwaukee won the title by one shot after shooting rounds of 426 and 439.
Sandburg had three of the five individuals who earned spots on the All-Region IV team. Sophomore Averi Heintzelman was runner-up with back-to-back rounds of 93. Freshman Olivia Schwingle took fourth after posting a 98 on consecutive days. Freshman Anna Duden finished fifth with rounds of 95 and 102.
Abby Hamman of Alexandria Tech fired rounds of 84 and 85 to earn medalist honors.
COLLEGE CROSS COUNTRY
Sandburg men 7th, Women 22nd in new rankings
GALESBURG — Both Carl Sandburg College cross country teams made appearances for the second straight time in the latest U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association NJCAA Division II polls, which were released Wednesday.
The Chargers men’s team dropped one spot to No. 7 in the third rankings of the season, while the women’s team moved down three spots to No. 22.
Both Chargers squads had solid showings against stiff competition at Friday’s Heartland Invitational. Sandburg’s men’s team placed second overall and had Josphat Langat, Calton Kibet and Emmanuel Kiprop sweep the top three spots in the 8-kilometer race. The Chargers finished behind only Heartland, which was third in this week’s poll, and defeated Kaskaskia (Division II No. 25), DuPage (Division III No. 2) and Joliet (NJCAA Division III No. 3).
Sandburg’s women’s team was fifth at the Heartland Invitational, finishing behind four other teams that appeared in this week’s rankings: Heartland (Division II No. 1), Joliet (Division III No. 1), DuPage (Division III No. 3) and Kaskaskia (Division II No. 16).
The Chargers’ next race is the Sauk Valley Invite at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Dixon.
