“A quality win on the road with some guys filling positions they don’t normally,” Galesburg coach Phil Redington said. “The defense played tough all night and did a nice job breaking down their speed. Matt Roach stepped up with a couple assists.”

The Streaks’ JV team fell to the Redbirds 4-2. Ryan Tapper and Julian Enuenwosu scored for Galesburg.

MEN’S SOCCER

No. 12 Sandburg bounces back with 6-1 win

GALESBURG — The 12th-ranked Carl Sandburg College men’s soccer team bounced back from its first loss this season by cruising to a 6-1 Region IV victory over Bryant & Stratton on Thursday afternoon at Kleine Field.

The Chargers (7-1 overall, 4-1 Region IV), who closed a string a six consecutive home games, struck for three goals in a 7-minute span early in the first half and peppered the Bobcats (1-4-1, 1-1-1) with 25 shots, including 18 on goal.

Jean Forestal scored twice for Sandburg, and his 11 goals on the season are good for second in NJCAA Division II.

Oliver Hawkins scored the match’s opening goal in the ninth minute off a rebound following a shot by Matheus Andrade. Hawkins then assisted on Sandburg’s second goal with a service into the box in the 10th minute for Guylberson Camille, whose ninth goal of the season moved him into a tie for fifth nationally.

The Chargers took a 3-0 lead into halftime as Forestal put away a centering pass by Jordan Delgado Ramos.

After the Bobcats got on the board in the 55th minute, Sandburg scored three times in the final 14 minutes, getting goals from Thomas Drake, Forestal and Neemias Moreira.

The Chargers’ defense limited Bryant & Stratton to just two shots on goal with Benjamin Hilton and Eric Schumacher sharing time in net.

COLLEGE CROSS COUNTRY

Sandburg men 6th, women 19th in rankings

GALESBURG — Both Carl Sandburg College cross country teams made history by appearing in the latest U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association NJCAA Division II polls released Wednesday.

The Chargers’ men’s team, which came in at No. 6, is ranked for the first time ever. Sandburg’s women’s team was ranked No. 19, its highest mark in program history. The team’s previous high was No. 25 during the 2018 season, which was also the only other time it had been nationally ranked.

Already this season, Sandburg’s men’s team has defeated NCAA Division I program Western Illinois in a dual meet, had freshman Calton Kibet named NJCAA Division II Runner of the Week and has seen the 8-kilometer school record broken twice, most recently by freshman Josphat Langat with a time of 25:49.0 at last week’s Bradley Intercollegiate.

The women’s team posted a second-place finish at the Fighting Bee Invitational hosted by St. Ambrose earlier this month. Sandburg was the only Region IV school to appear in this week’s women’s rankings.

The Chargers’ next race is the Heartland Invite at 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 1 at Maxwell Park in Normal.
