With November marking the National Football League’s Salute to Service month, the Dallas Cowboys are recognizing the occasion with a subtle-yet-significant change to their traditional silver, white, and blue helmets. In their Week 9 game against the Denver Broncos, the Cowboys will feature a red stripe along the traditional blue and white running down the middle of their helmets in recognition of United States National Medal of Honor recipients.

The red, white, and blue look of the Cowboys’ helmets is a throwback to 1976, when they sported the same red stripe in recognition of the bicentennial anniversary of the American Revolution. This will be the first change the Cowboys have made to their helmets since 2012, which was the last time they wore their throwback white helmets.

In addition to their special helmets, the Cowboys have also announced that eight Medal of Honor recipients will be in attendance at their Week 9 game, where they will be honored in a special halftime ceremony.

“This will truly be a special day for all of us as we salute the men and women around the world who protect and defend our country,” read a statement by Charlotte Jones, Cowboys Executive Vice President and Chairman of the National Medal of Honor Museum Foundation. “We are honored to have our Medal of Honor recipients in attendance, representing the 3,508 recipients of the nation’s most prestigious military decoration, who made heroic sacrifices, many the ultimate sacrifice, while preserving our freedom.

“The red stripe on the helmet provides a beautiful ribbon to wrap around this salute to those who currently serve our country’s military—and the patriotic love and appreciation that we all share for those who came before them.”

The Cowboys remain one of the hottest teams in the NFL, as they were able to improve to 6-1 with a win over the Minnesota Vikings despite the absence of starting quarterback Dak Prescott.
