WEST BENGAL Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday visited the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium – the house stadium of the Real Madrid soccer membership.

She was accompanied by former BCCI president and ex-cricketer Sourav Ganguly, state Chief Secretary HK Dwivedi, and some officers of the West Bengal authorities who have been on an administrative journey to Spain to hunt funding in West Bengal.

“Bengal has in its blood football, cricket, and other sports. We have a bigger stadium, Salt Lake Stadium…We have come here to see their infrastructure and how they are doing business with football. This is a good idea. I am hopeful to use this idea in the future,” she stated.

Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, which is taken into account to be the house to Real Madrid Football Club, is the second-largest seating capability in Spain.

Banerjee later posted on X, “An unforgettable day! Today, I visited the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, home to the Real Madrid Football Club. Santiago Bernabéu, steeped in history and memories of legendary moments, embodies the dreams and spirit of sports enthusiasts worldwide. West Bengal has always been committed to promoting sports, nurturing young talents, and fostering a culture of athleticism. Let this visit remind us that sports unites us all, strengthens ties, and promotes cultural exchange.”

On Saturday, a gathering was organised between Javier Serra Guevara, Director General of ICEX, the apex commerce and funding company of the federal government of Spain and West Bengal delegation led by H Ok Dwivedi, Chief Secretary, Vandana Yadav Industry Secretary, industrialist Sanjay Budhia and Rajeev Singh.

Criticising Ganguly’s announcement, Bengal BJP president Sukanta Majumdar, on Saturday, questioned the aim of getting an industry-specific announcement made via Sourav Ganguly in Spain. “I fail to understand [it]. Sourav Ganguly could have made the announcement standing in Kolkata, Delhi or in Mumbai,” he stated.
