Healthcare data archiving and interoperability company Ellkay has added long-time Intermountain Healthcare executive Marc Probst as its new chief information officer, the company announced Tuesday.

Probst retired from his post as vice president and CIO of Intermountain, a not-for-profit health system based in Salt Lake City, in July.

In his new role, Probst will work on building Elmwood Park, N.J.-based Ellkay’s partnerships, strategic initiatives and product roadmap, with a focus on interoperability, according to the software and services company. Ellkay’s customers include hospitals, ambulatory practices, payers, diagnostic laboratories and healthcare information technology vendors.

“Marc brings valuable industry experience and expands our strategic relationships in the industry,” said Kamal Patel, Ellkay’s chief executive officer, in a statement.

Probst, who has worked in the health IT industry for more than 30 years, 17 of which he spent at Intermountain, announced his retirement from the health system in January after being named the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives and the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society’s 2019 John E. Gall Jr. CIO of the year.

He’s replaced by Ryan Smith, a former senior vice president at data warehousing and analytics company Health Catalyst, who joined Intermountain as vice president and CIO in late June.

Probst has served on CHIME’s innovation advisory board and board of trustees, as well as serving as chair of CHIME’s foundation board and the group’s public policy steering committee.

Probst also served on the federal Health IT Policy Committee, an advisory committee HHS disbanded in 2017.

“I am proud and excited to join this experienced company who has demonstrated their dedication to providing innovative and interoperable solutions,” Probst said in a statement.
