WHEELING — Don’t call it a comeback.

Wheeling Central faced multiple deficits on Wednesday night and rose to the occasion each time as the Maroon Knights pulled off a five-set 18-25, 25-20, 25-23, 22-25 and 15-11 victory over rival Linsly.

The Cadets took the opening set only to see the Knights take the next two of three.

Linsly also led 23-18 in the third set before Nicole Reasbeck stepped behind the service line and reeled off seven straight points to capture the set.

To finish the night, Central (5-5) fell behind 7-2 in the fifth set but cut the deficit to 11-8. That’s when Maddie LeMasters began serving and delivered a seven-point scoring streak to wrap up the match in thrilling fashion.

“They didn’t give up and they kept their composure, which is all we ask for but they were aggressive at the same time,” Central volleyball coach Delaney Denniston said. “We are really happy with the way they played. They really pulled out a nice win.”

The Knights were led in victory by Reasbeck’s nine kills, 17 digs and five aces.

Delaney O’Connell’s 10 kills played a big role in the victory, as well as Alexis Hood’s 33 assists and four digs.

Tristen White poured in eight kills and five crucial blocks, while LeMasters garnered eight kills and four blocks, Gabby Leadbittner supplied eight digs and Meredith Romanek added six digs.

“I think all-around we played well,” Denniston said. “The biggest thing was we weren’t dwelling on our mistakes, we pushed through and we didn’t let the fans or Linsly get in our heads and we just played our game.”

Linsly falls to 8-2 with the loss.

“I just told them (after the game) that we beat ourselves,” Linsly coach Ashlee Jividen said. “Making errors and things like that hurt us but they are 100 percent things we can work on moving forward.”

Paden City d. John Marshall

25-13, 25-15, 27-25

PADEN CITY — Tanley McEldowney turned in 14 points and 12 digs as Paden City upended John Marshall.

Hope Weber recorded 20 assists, 17 kills, seven points and five digs for the Wildcats and Mallory Yeater added 17 assists, 13 kills, 11 digs and six points.

Edison d. Weir 21-25, 25-10, 21-25, 25-11, 15-12

RICHMOND — Gracie Phillips had a big night serving with 25 points and eight digs as Edison edged Weir. Karissa Speedy had 23 assists, 10 points and four kills, while Corinne Freeman had 15 kills and 10 blocks. Savanna Ankrom had 13 points and 4 kills.

Tyler Consolidated d. Wahama 25-20, 23-25, 25-16, 25-23

SISTERSVILLE — Regan Smith produced 20 kills, 14 assists, 12 points and 10 digs as Tyler Consolidated downed Wahama.

Carleigh Phillips provided a spark with 21 assists, 18 kills, eight digs, six points and six blocks.

GOLF

Wheeling Park 316, Linsly 342, Wheeling Central 379

WHEELING — James Salvatori led Wheeling Park to victory over its city rivals Wheeling Central and Linsly by shooting a 76 to earn match medalist honors.

Noah Seivertson was next with a 79 for the Patriots and teammate Campbell Keogler added a 79.

Linsly’s Aiden Gruber and Central’s Ryan Constanzo each carded scores of 80 to lead their teams.

Tyler Consolidated 186, Magnolia 186, Paden City NS

SISTERSVILLE — Magnolia’s Alex Parker shot a 39 to earn medalist honors as the Blue Eagles and Silver Knights tied.

Mason Nichols and Landen Miller of Tyler each carded scores of 45, along with Paden City’s Will McGinnis.

SOCCER

Minerva 7, Edison 1

RICHMOND — Maddie Brenstuhl scored the lone goal for Edison in a tough defeat to Minerva.

Emma Scott and Kaydence Habbit each collected five saves for the Wildcats.
