Mediter-Rustic Cuisine set to open this month in Purcellville

A new Mediterranean restaurant is slated to open this month in the Purcellville Gateway Shopping Center in the former WK Hearth space.

Owned by the father-son team of Murat Bulut and Ugur Bulut, Mediter-Rustic Cuisine will serve classic Mediterranean dishes with beef, lamb, poultry, seafood and vegetarian options.

Ugur Bulut’s restaurant career started in Turkey working in hotel kitchens after studying culinary arts. After serving as an executive chef in multiple restaurants and hotels in Turkey, he moved to the U.S. in 2001. He and his father previously owned Ottoman Kitchen in Chantilly until they decided to sell it and open Mediter-Rustic.

The Purcellville spot was selected for the beauty of the historic building, and they said they appreciated the small-town community feel. The restaurant was originally slated to open several months ago, but the COVID-19 pandemic slowed down their plans.

The interior has only minor updates from the WK Hearth days. (WK Hearth closed two years ago.) These included changing the hardwood flooring while maintaining a similar look, adding new paint and implementing a few upgrades in the kitchen.

“We did nothing major that would take away from its rustic looks and roots. Most of the major changes took place in the kitchen side. The landlord installed a new large hood and a walk-in cooler before we moved in. We then upgraded every single equipment so that it is reliable and clean,” Ugur Bulut said.

The menu has a wide range of options for lunch and dinner with prices starting at $6.95 for appetizers to a $24.95 filet mignon. Most of the sandwiches, bowls and kebobs are in the $10 to $18 range.

One of the highlights is the freshly made gyro doner, the owners said.

“We noticed that it’s nearly impossible to find freshly made gyro doner in the area. We make our gyro doner fresh every single day from ground up. It is not purchased frozen from someone else. We strive to keep that culture going forward,” Ugur Bulut said.

Other menu favorites include Adana Kebab, which is a long skewer of ground lamb with spices served with grilled tomato and pepper on grilled bread, rice, thick yogurt, and special garnish.

“It’s very unique in the area, and everyone seems to love it,” said the younger Bulut.

The space can accommodate about 65 people and 20 outside. There is also a private room to accommodate about 16 people.

Once open later this month — an official opening date has yet to be set — carryout will be available. The restaurant will be open for lunch Tuesday to Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and dinner Tuesday to Saturday 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. The restaurant is closed on Monday.
