NEW DELHI: Mental issues reminiscent of relationship troubles, household points, even examination stress can ship one reeling with ideas even of suicide. But many lives have been saved up to now six months as a result of Tele Manas, a psychological well being helpline, is only a ring away.
Delhi authorities’s Institute of Human Behaviour and Allied Sciences (IHBAS) has been coordinating the helpline programme for Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Gujarat, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Leh and Ladakh. People can name the toll-free numbers 14416 or 1-800-91-4416 at any time of the day and search assist in a language of their alternative.
“We have observed that individuals in the 22-40 age group call the line the most,” revealed Dr Om Prakash, who’s concerned with the programme. So far, Tele Manas has acquired multiple lakh calls general, although Dr Rajinder Dhamija, director, IHBAS, stated that thus far the hospital itself had acquired round 4,000 calls.
The calls that principally got here had been associated to problems in relationships, household points, teenage issues and schizophrenia. Psychologist Dr Swati Jawla, working as the primary operator, stated, “At board exam times, many teenagers call to inquire about treatments for stress or medications for depression. We also get calls from people who are confused and unaware of what they are suffering or going through.”
Telecounselling of people that name has saved the lives of many with suicidal ideas. “The first task of the counsellors is to gauge the intensity of the call, to assess whether the caller is really going to commit suicide. Does the caller have a history of suicide attempts? Is suicide only an ideation for the person? Or has the individual actually planned it properly?” stated Jawla. “If we feel that suicide is an idea but the person isn’t going to attempt it, we provide supportive counselling and have follow-ups.”
Prakash defined that the counsellor engages the callers in a dialog and urges them to surrender ideas of killing themselves. “Meanwhile, we track the caller’s number and try to reach the location or inform the family so that a life can be saved. Many aggressive and violent patients have been saved. We have realised that around 60% of the cases can be resolved over the phone,” he stated.
The programme features a community of 23 tele-mental well being centres of excellence, with NIMHANS being the nodal centre and the International Institute of Information Technology, Bangalore offering know-how help. At the centres, the 20 counsellors or so current try to unravel the issue for the caller. If the person stays unhappy, the decision is transferred to a psychiatrist. If the problem stays unresolved even then, the particular person is taken to a hospital for counselling
“We have been responding to many crisis calls, providing solutions and we resolve nearly 80% of the cases on the telephone. Those who need establishment care are the only ones we bring to the hospital. The programme still has the potential to grow and help many more people,” famous Dhamija.
