Ciudad Victoria, Mexico (AP) —Mexico authorities have found 652 Central American immigrants on six trailers near the US border.

The truck stopped at a military checkpoint on the highway between Ciudad Victoria and Monterrey in northern Tamaulipas on Thursday night. State public security agencies said Friday that four suspects had been arrested.

Among the immigrants were 564 Guatemalans and immigrants from Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua and Belize. More than half of the people on the truck were children, and nearly 200 of them were unaccompanied by adults.

Authorities said the truck journey apparently began in Puebla’s central state and was about to reach Monterrey, the main transport hub for reaching various points on the US-Mexico border.

The trailers were padlocked and authorities were forced to move them to state police facilities to carve them out. The Red Cross said 40 migrants were evaluated for dehydration and malnutrition.

The Tamaulipas Department of Health said Friday that nine of the migrants had tested positive for COVID-19.

Tamaulipas is a popular route for smuggling immigrants and is the closest border state to Central American immigrants.
