MIAC makes it official, postponing most fall sports competitions until spring

The coronavirus pandemic continued to alter small-college sports in Minnesota on Tuesday when the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference announced it plans to move six fall sports, including football, to the spring of 2021.

Along with football, the NCAA Division III conference plans to hold its volleyball, men’s and women’s cross-country and men’s and women’s soccer seasons in the spring. The conference is working to develop spring schedules for those sports, which have been designated as medium- or high-risk for transmission of COVID-19 by the NCAA.

The MIAC expects men’s and women’s golf and men’s and women’s tennis — designated as low-risk sports — can participate in conference-only competitions this fall.

“Our No. 1 priority is the health and safety of students and staff,” said Paul Pribbenow, Chair of the MIAC Presidents’ Council and Augsburg University President. “The decision to postpone competition for many of our fall sports was very difficult, as we know how much our student-athletes want to compete and how important athletics are to each of our campuses, but we need to put ourselves in a position to return to play as safely as possible.”

Training, practice, and other athletic activities for all teams will be permitted in accordance with NCAA Division III rules and campus, state, and NCAA health directives.

The MIAC’s announcement follows an increasing national trend of postponing, canceling or altering fall sports seasons at the Division III or Division II level. The Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, a D-III conference, on Monday canceled all fall sports for the 2020-21 school year. The Division II Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference on Monday pushed back the start of its fall seasons to late September or early October, with football schedules being cut to eight games.

Decisions about winter sports in the MIAC will be made later. Hockey and basketball usually start their seasons in late October and early November, respectively, at the Division III level.

The NCAA Division III Management Council last week approved a proposal to allow schools to move or extend fall sports competitions to the spring.

Macalester, a member of the Midwest Conference in football but an MIAC member in all other sports, will not compete in football this season.
