Thiruvananthapuram: A sports literacy mission on the lines of the state literacy mission will be launched by the government to create awareness about the importance of sports and physical fitness among citizens, sports and Wakf minister V Abdurahiman said in the assembly on Tuesday.
Replying to a calling attention by Abdul Hameed P regarding the need to create awareness regarding sports literacy and revising the sports curriculum, the minister said that the sports literacy mission will be launched soon in coordination with various departments. The minister said that as part of launching sporting hubs in schools, a project titled “play for health” will also be launched.
In addition, the government is taking steps to launch open gyms at various locations, and the steps for constituting sporting councils in panchayats and municipalities are also progressing. Also, the initiative of setting up playgrounds in all panchayats and promoting the state’s own martial art like Kalari are also being undertaken by the government. The sports department is undertaking discussions with the education department regarding the revision of the sports curriculum, and it has been decided that the physical training periods in school timetables should be utilised only for sporting events. Conducting marathons, various championships, etc, to promote sports are also part of the government’s decisions to promote sports, he said.
