The researchers used the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera on board NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) to detect the 1000’s of comparatively small, younger thrust faults extensively distributed within the lunar crust.

The contraction is attributable to cooling of the moon’s still-hot inside and tidal forces exerted by Earth, leading to international shrinking.
