Riders competed for prize money earlier this month at a rodeo at the Morongo Indian Reservation.

Amateur and professional ropers and riders took part Oct. 9 in the 8th Annual Morongo Open Ranch Rodeo, seeking cash prizes and a chance to qualify for a roping competition in Reno.

Riders and ropers joined in events, including team roping, barrel racing, breakaway roping, a news release states.

Younger competitors participated in youth barrel racing, mutton busting and steer riding.

“Morongo’s annual rodeo is always a fun, family-friendly event that celebrates our rich history and welcomes riders and ropers of all ages and skill levels to compete,” Morongo Tribal Council Member and rodeo President Brian Lugo said in the release.

The Morongo Band of Mission Indians and Morongo Cultural Heritage  Department sponsored the rodeo.
