M S Swaminathan, hailed as the daddy of India’s Green Revolution, handed away Thursday. He was 98. Swaminathan was instrumental in creating high-yielding styles of paddy that helped guarantee India’s low-income farmers produce extra yield.

Swaminathan was awarded the primary World Food Prize in 1987 following which he arrange the MS Swaminathan Research Foundation in Chennai.

Apart from a number of awards, Swaminathan is the recipient of the Ramon Magsaysay Award (1971) and the Albert Einstein World Science Award (1986).

Swaminathan is survived by his spouse Mina, and three daughters Soumya Swaminathan, Madhura Swaminathan, and Nitya Swaminathan.
