Mumbai: Canteens to remain closed, all shops in campuses to stay shut, cultural activities and contact sports to be avoided. These are among the standard operating procedures (SOPs) to be followed by colleges affiliated to Mumbai University. The detailed list was released on Sunday following a government resolution which gave degree colleges the nod to open from October 20.
The MU has asked colleges to offer a combined instructional module of both physical and online teaching for students attending classes physically as well as for students attending classes in online mode.
A year and a half into the Covid-19 pandemic, degree college campuses in the state will open their gates for physical classes on October 20. An SOP has been issued for the college main entrance, office and administrative area, and for the academic zones. “Social distancing to be maintained in common places as well as classrooms. Students to be seated, while leaving alternate benches vacant. If needed, batches for imparting lectures/instructions may be created (without increasing the number of divisions). It is advised that the first bench in the classrooms is moved back to ensure at least 6 – 8 feet gap between the lecturer and the students seated in front,” read the SOP.
From compulsory face mask at all times to continuous cleaning and sanitisation of surfaces, from guidelines onAC areas to details on extracurricular activities, there is an SOP on what must be done if a person with Covid symptoms is noticed. “Specific markings may be made with sufficient distances to ensure physical distancing in the premises which are frequently used by students for different purposes such as exam related issues, form submissions etc. Official activities such as filling of admission forms, examination forms, fees payment, scholarships disbursal etc. must be enabled in an online format by the college administration,” read the SOP.
Higher and technical education minister Uday Samant had announced on Wednesday that fully vaccinated students can attend classes. For students below 18 years old, vaccination is not mandatory, said the GR issued on Wednesday evening. While colleges in the state can reopen with 50% capacity or more, the decision to start classes in Mumbai will be taken by the varsity in consultation with the BMC.
Although permission has been given for offline classes from grades 8 to 12, few colleges in the city have managed to start junior colleges due to commuting constraints. The GR issued by the state said, “Colleges and universities can call 50% students or more after consulting with the local administration.”
