NEW DELHI: Not heeding to the sports ministry’s order, the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) has decided to go ahead with its elections scheduled for Saturday in Mohali. The federation will wait for the judiciary to decide its fate since the matter is pending before the Delhi High Court.
Incumbent president Raninder Singh is seeking re-election to the president’s post. The NRAI has appointed an additional Returning Officer (RO) in Justice Inderjeet Singh Walia, along with the original appointee Justice (retd) Mehtab Singh Gill, to conduct the electoral process.
On the ministry’s part, it has decided not to send its observer to oversee the elections.
NRAI has decided to wait till the next hearing in the court on December 13. According to sources in the federation, NRAI and Raninder have built their case on the premise that the word ‘tenure’ in the sports code nowhere restricts the president from seeking re-election.
“The code says that the president of any recognised NSF, including the IOA, can hold the office for a maximum of 12 years. There’s no mention of the word ‘term’ in the code. So, for the ministry to say that Raninder has completed his third term is entirely wrong. The president still has one-and-a-half-years to serve in the office till December 2022,” the source informed TOI.
Singh became the president in 2010.
