KATHMANDU, Nepal — Nepal’s authorities determined to ban the favored social media app TikTok on Monday, saying it was disrupting “social harmony” within the nation.

The announcement was made following a Cabinet assembly. Foreign Minister Narayan Prakash Saud stated the app can be banned instantly.

“The government has decided to ban TikTok as it was necessary to regulate the use of the social media platform that was disrupting social harmony, goodwill and flow of indecent materials,” Saud stated.

He stated that to make social media platforms accountable, the federal government has requested the businesses to register and open a liaison workplace in Nepal, pay taxes and abide by the nation’s legal guidelines and laws.

It wasn’t clear what triggered the ban or if TikTok had refused to adjust to Nepal’s requests. The firm didn’t instantly reply to an electronic mail searching for remark.

TikTok, owned by China’s ByteDance, has confronted scrutiny in quite a lot of international locations due to issues that Beijing might use the app to reap person information or advance its pursuits.
