Reed Hastings, the co-founder, chairman and co-chief executive officer of Netflix, has given high praise to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. In an interview with the American businessman on the news channel, CNBC, Mr Hastings said that the couple would provide ‘epic entertainment’ for his streaming service.

When asked on air about the Sussexes, he said: ‘It’s going to be epic entertainment. I’m so excited about that deal.’ He also praised the couple for not agreeing to the first deal that came their way: ‘They’re smart, they were shopping it around across all the major companies and I think we really put together the best complete package.’

He explained that the deal is to do a wide range of entertainment with Netflix and he is confident that it will prove a success. ‘I can’t tell you anymore than that about it at this point, but I think it will be some of the most exciting, most viewed content next year,’ he revealed in the interview.

He confirmed what has already been reported, that the Duchess of Sussex will work as a producer rather than appearing before the camera. He detailed: ‘The real focus for them is on being producers and on building that production capacity. That’s the key thing. They’ve developed a great eye for story and we’ll be working with them on that basis.’

The Duke and Duchess will produce films and television programmes including ‘scripted series, docu-series, documentaries, features and children’s programming’. Their team have already confirmed that an innovative nature docu-series and an animated series about inspiring women are already in the works. The Netflix deal will allow them to reach 193 million subscribers worldwide. There has been a lot of speculation as to the actual cost of the deal, but predictions have largely centred around the $150 million mark.
