The newest entertainment complex in downtown Greenville is set to open this week. It’s called District 356 and is adjacent to Fluor Field on Field Street.We first told you about the complex in February 2021 when Greenville city leaders unanimously passed an ordinance to create the project. (Watch that story above)The goal was to create a pedestrian-friendly environment around the baseball field and a way to continue to bring foot traffic to the West End area on gamedays and beyond. The area is modeled after Jersey Street at Boston’s Fenway Park. Video below shows renderings presented in 2021:”It’s kind of an inspiration of Fenway Park and what they’ve accomplished there with Jersey Street,” Greenville Drive General Manager Eric Jarinko said in 2021. “The fan experience really starts before you even walk into the ballpark, and really that’s what we’re trying to accomplish here.” District 356 will extend many of Fluor Field’s special events and community celebrations.”We’re looking at this as not just a Greenville Drive or baseball proposition,” Greenville City Spokeswoman Beth Brotherton said when the project was announced. “We’re looking at this as a space for festivals, for events. A place where people can gather and picnic and eat or have concerts or other music opportunities.”So what’s behind the name? District 356 refers to Shoeless Joe Jackson’s lifetime batting average in the major leagues. The district will also serve as a pathway between an adjacent apartment project known as The .408, itself an homage to Jackson’s batting average — specifically that of his 1911 season. The grand opening and ribbon-cutting is set for Wednesday and will be held in conjunction with the Drive’s annual Green Day celebration commemorating the founding of the city of Greenville.
