Joelinton
Joelinton has scored four goals in eight cup appearances for Newcastle United

Steve Bruce says he was “pleased” by Newcastle’s reaction to their Premier League defeat to Brighton, as they recorded their biggest ever competitive away win at Morecambe in the Carabao Cup.

The Premier League side outclassed their League Two opponents scoring five times before the break, for the first time since 1993.

Joelinton scored twice for the Magpies, with Miguel Almiron, Jacob Murphy, Isaac Hayden, Jamaal Lascelles and a Sam Lavelle own goal adding to the tally.

“When you have a disappointing result, the one thing you have to do is respond and that’s what pleased me more than anything,” said the Newcastle manager.

“The response, the attitude towards it on an awful night, nobody here. Some of the football, particularly the first half an hour, was terrific. I’ve said it many, many times now, we’re capable of winning five games, which gets you maybe to a cup final.”

Newcastle now travel to League Two Newport in the fourth round, with all ties due to take place in the week commencing 28 September.

The hosts, who came into the tie on the back of a 5-0 home defeat against Cambridge, were not helped by Toumani Diagouraga’s dismissal when they were already 4-0 down.

But it had already looked like being a long evening for the Shrimps when £40m striker Joelinton opened the scoring after five minutes, with his close-range finish coming after good work from Emil Krafth and Miguel Almiron.

From there Steve Bruce’s side went through the gears. Almiron rounded Morecambe goalkeeper Mark Halstead to add a second.

The Magpies’ third came via Murphy’s curling effort from 18 yards, before Joelinton scored arguably the pick of the goals with a superb arcing shot from 25 yards that flew into the top right corner.

Hayden’s long range effort and Lascelles’ near-post header had looked like rounding off the scoring until Lavelle’s unfortunate late own goal.

‘Newcastle were absolutely outstanding’ – what they said

Morecambe manager Derek Adams: “It was an extremely difficult night for us. Newcastle were absolutely outstanding tonight – the way they passed the ball, the way they moved, the way they pressed and the goals they scored.

“Undoubtedly they deserved to go through to the next round of the cup. To win 7-0 away from home, I thought they respected the competition very well.”
