Coronavirus: More than 2.76 crore samples have been tested in India.

India saw another 64,553 coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, bringing the country’s total case count to 24,61,190, according to the Union Health Ministry data. India has reported the highest number of daily cases in world since the last 10 days. According to WHO data, from August 4 to 13, the country has reported the highest number of daily cases globally. The recovery rate stands at 70.17 per cent, with 17,51,555 people recovering in the country from the highly-contagious disease. The number of COVID-19 deaths has increased by 1,007 in the past 24 hours and has thus reached 48,040.

Here are the top 10 updates on coronavirus:

  1. Maharashtra and particularly Mumbai continues to be India’s biggest COVID-19 worry. The state registered a spike of 11,813 new cases on Thursday which took the coronavirus tally in the state to 5,60,126.

  2. Tamil Nadu on Thursday recorded 5,835 new coronavirus cases and 119 deaths, taking the tally to 3,20,355 and the death count to 5,397. Chengalpattu district is emerging as the new COVID-19 epicentre in Tamil Nadu with more than 400 cases daily.

  3. The number of COVID-19 infections in Karnataka crossed the two lakh-mark, as 6,706 new cases of the virus pushed the total cases to 2,03,200.

  4. The COVID-19 tally in Andhra Pradesh shot up to 2,64,142 on Thursday as 9,996 fresh cases were reported in the last 24 hours.

  5. The Telangana government has decided to take over 50 per cent of the beds in private hospitals in the state drawing on powers granted under the Epidemic Diseases Act. The state reported 1,921 new COVID-19 cases, pushing the overall tally to 88,396.

  6. The COVIDF-19 fatality rate in the country  has declined to 1.95 per cent. There are more than 6.60 lakh active cases, which is 26.88 per cent of the total cases.

  7. According to Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), more than 2.76 crore samples have been tested, with 8,48,728 being tested on Thursday, the highest in a day.

  8. “There has been no such day in previous months when the recovery rate of a day is not better than its previous day and the fatality rate of a day is not less than its previous day. People & Covid Warriors have fought strongly against COVID-19 will win soon,” Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan.

  9. India is the country with the third-highest coronavirus caseload in the world after the United States and Brazil.

  10. The coronavirus pandemic has killed over 7.55 lakh people globally since it emerged in China late last year. Over 2.09 crore people have been infected with the highly contagious virus.
