Following a pair of rulings which removed Gov. Tom Wolf’s crowd-size limits, PENNCREST School District has updated its sports attendance policy to allow more people to attend athletic events.

In the update, posted to the Maplewood Junior/Senior High School and district Facebook pages on Wednesday, indoor sports such as girls volleyball and junior high girls basketball, will allow two spectators per participant from both the home and away teams to watch the game, up to a maximum of 175 fans. PENNCREST Superintendent Timothy Glasspool said the student athletes will be given tickets to hand out to friends and family whom they wish to let attend.

Previously the district was not allowing any spectators to indoor sporting events due to the limit of 25 people imposed by the governor during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Meanwhile, for outdoor events, spectators for soccer, cross country and junior varsity and junior high school football will allow spectators with no listed limits. These sports allowed spectators under the previous policy, but with a 250-person total.

For varsity football, things are a little different. All home team participants will be given four admission tickets they can pass out to friends and family, while the away team will receive 50. Capacity at the stadium is not to exceed 375 fans.

Under the former rules, home team participants were only to be given two tickets, and none would be given to the other team. The stadium was also restricted to the same 250-person capacity total as the other outdoor sports.

Admission at all fall sports is free, though the update advises spectators that they should not expect admission to games taking place outside the district. Face coverings and social distancing are still required.

Gov. Wolf’s limits were struck down Sept. 14 by U.S. District Judge William Stickman IV as unconstitutional. While Wolf’s administration is appealing the motion, Judge Stickman on Tuesday ruled that the crowd-size limits would not remain in place while the ruling was going through appeal.
