NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said that looking at human rights with an eye on political gains and loss harms these rights as well as democracy. He said some people try to dent country’s image in name of human rights.
Speaking at the 28th National Human Rights Commission Foundation (NHRC) Day programme, PM Modi said some people see human rights violations in the same type of incident and the same people do not see human rights violations in any other such incident.
“Some people try to dent country’s image in name of human rights, we need to be alert about it,” PM Modi said.
“Human rights are grossly violated when they are viewed with a political color, viewed through a political lens, weighed with the scales of political profit and loss. This kind of selective behavior is equally harmful for democracy,” PM said.
“There is another aspect related to human rights, which I want to discuss today. In recent years, some people have started interpreting human rights in their own way, looking at their own interests,” he added.
In his speech, the Prime Minister cited a number of measures taken by his government to deliver basic needs like toilets, cooking gas, electricity and homes to the poor and said this give rise to their aspirations and make them more aware of their rights.
He said by making a law against ‘triple talaq’, his government has bestowed new rights on Muslim women.
PM Modi also spoke of the measures like 26-week maternity leave and more stringent law for rape to highlight his dispensation’s empowerment of women.
The event which marked the 28th foundation day programme of NHRC was also attended by Union home minister Amit Shah and Chairperson of National Human Rights Commission of India Justice Arun Kumar Mishra.
The Prime Minister had earlier said that NHRC plays an important role in our nation in protecting the human rights and dignity of the marginalised.
NHRC was set up under the Protection of Human Rights Act 1993 on October 12, 1993, for the promotion and protection of human rights.
The Commission takes cognizance of any form of human rights violations, conducts enquiries and in cases of violation of human rights, recommends to the public authorities for payment of compensation to the victims, other remedial and legal measures against the erring public servants.
