MUMBAI: The Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC) is expected to host the Pune Season 2021 from Sunday, October 17 at the Pune Racecourse. Although the RWITC appears race-ready, with the entire set up including track, horses, trainers and jockeys geared up for the Sunday kick off, the state government’s permission is still awaited.
However, sources say RWITC may go ahead even if the permission does not arrive by Sunday as the government in principle has agreed to issue one. It is also likely that punters and bookmakers will not be permitted inside the racecourse premises. TOI earlier reached out to RWITC to get a clarity on these issues and an official response is still awaited.
As a part of its preparations, RWITC has scheduled nine races for Sunday’s opening day and has even published a list of likely runners for the day.
“We have kept our horses ready to race for some time now and will certainly be more than happy to race when given the go ahead by the club,” veteran trainer Mansingh Jadhav told TOI on Thursday. The horse owners look happy with the resumption of racing even though they will be offered only 50%of the stake money.
“Covid has had racing in Western India on the ventilator for nearly 10 months now and owners are looking forward to it getting discharged from hospital this Sunday,” Shiven Surendranath, president of the Western India Race Horse Owners’ Association (WIRHOA), told TOI.
“A special thank you is also due from all owners to Dilip Thacker.” he added.
