The fate of some fall sports is up in the air for students at Bethlehem Central School District.

The school recently announced it will not allow certain sports to compete, even though the state determined they were low-risk activities.

Student athletes and parents are frustrated by this decision, so they’re not letting it go quietly.

They’re expected to rally outside the high school ahead of the school board meeting Wednesday evening.

At least six people, parents, and players will share their concerns with board members.

District officials cited on-field safety concerns and believe it’d be too difficult to keep players and coaches separated on the field.

“Some of the other sports were given the option of an optional fall session, session 2 it’s called, in the spring, and soccer and field hockey weren’t even given that option,” said Dr. Shannon Comley Sood, a physician and mother. “So it’s really eliminating the sport for the year, which is really going to be harmful, hurtful, devastating to these kids.”

Wednesday’s meeting gets underway at 6 p.m. at the high school. Students and parents are expected to rally an hour or so before that.
