Madurai: With the Sports Authority of India (SAI) retaining the popularity for coaching for basketball and volleyball at Mayiladuthurai SAI centre on May 3, Madurai MP Su Venkatesan has thanked Union minister of sports activities and youth affairs, Anurag Singh Thakur and SAI, for accepting his plea and aiding sportspersons from Tamil Nadu.
The MP had written to Thakur on April 11, expressing his shock after the popularity for coaching for basketball and volleyball video games from Mayiladuthurai SAI centre was withdrawn via a round. It is the one SAI centre in Tamil Nadu accepted for coaching completely girls basketball and volleyball gamers.
Venkatesan pressured that girls basketball gamers are pressured to go to centres in different states and demanded to retain recognition of coaching amenities at Mayiladuthurai.
Following the MP’s letter, the SAI authorities retained the popularity. Basketball participant, Harshitha from Madurai, who trains at Mayiladuthurai centre and her mother and father, Karthik and Sofia, met Venkatesan on Saturday and expressed their gratitude. “We were worried about what would happen to the future sports aspirations and education of our daughter if she only had to go to Varanasi for training. Now, the retaining of recognition alleviates fears of all Tamil Nadu students,” mentioned Karthik. TNN
