New Delhi: The BSE Sensex and the Nifty game up most of the intraday gains and ended marginally higher on Wednesday as IT, pharma, FMCG shares and heavyweight Reliance Industries witnessed profit booking in the last hour of trade. The Sensex finally closed 86.47 points higher at 38,614.79 after touching an intraday high of 38,788.51. The Nifty settled 23.05 points higher at 11,408.40. Banking shares outperformed benchmark indices today. Nifty Bank, the banking sub-index of NSE settled 0.52% higher.

Among Nifty stocks, Zee Entertainment rallies 13.14% to be the top gainer followed by Gail and Tech Mahindra, which gained 4.58% and 1.97% respectively. Bharti Airtel, Maruti Suzuki, ICICI Bank, SBI, HDFC Life, HDFC Bank, Shree Cements, Ultratech Cements, Asian Paints, RIL were the other prominent gainers in the Nifty, rising between 0.68%-1.81%.

Bajaj Auto was the top loser in Nifty, down 1.41% followed by ONGC and Nestle, which fell 1.36% and 1.21% respectively. Coal India, Wipro, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Britannia, HUL, Cipla, Infosys, Bajaj Finserv were the other losers in the Nifty.

Market breadth was positive today. Out of the 1,629 shares traded on the NSE, 1,070 shares ended in the green while 559 shares closed with losses.
