The death of a 19-year-old Dalit woman from Hatrash, UP at a hospital in Delhi, days after she was gangraped and brutally assaulted, has triggered a massive outrage. The Opposition has hit out at the Yogi Adityanath-led BJP government in Uttar Pradesh for the heinous act and said under him, the state has become “India’s crime capital”.

The Hathras gangrape victim died around 3 am on Tuesday. She was shifted to Delhi’s Safdurjung Hospital from Aligarh on Monday after her condition showed no signs of improvement. She was gang-raped on September 14 following which she was admitted to the AMU’s Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College and Hospital in Aligarh.

As per reports, the accused had also tried to strangulate her to death as she resisted their attempt and in the process, she had also ended up biting her tongue and suffering a severe cut on it. The four accused have already been arrested.

Meanwhile, reactions from people from different walks of life have started to pour in, conveying their anger and aguish over the gruesome gangrape and murder.

Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi said the “class-specific jungle raj” of Uttar Pradesh has killed another young woman. “The government said that this is fake news and left the victim to die. Neither was this unfortunate incident fake, nor was the death of the victim and the mercilessness of the government,” Rahul Gandhi tweeted in Hindi.

His sister and Congress general secretary in-charge for Uttar Pradesh Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also hit out at the Yogi Adityanath government. She alleged that there is “no semblance of security” for women in the state.

“A Dalit girl who was victim of demoniac behavior in Hathras has passed away at Safdarjung Hospital. For two weeks, she struggled between life and death in hospitals,” she said in a tweet in Hindi. She said incidents of rape one after another, in Hathras, Shahjahanpur and Gorakhpur have shaken the state. “Law and order in UP has deteriorated beyond limits. There is no semblance of safety for women. Criminals are committing crimes in the open,” Priyanka Gandhi said.

The Samajwadi Party too has hit out at the BJP and said the state government could not deliver justice to the victim when she was alive.

“The government could not deliver justice to the victim when she was alive. Whom is it trying to save now? For seven days, the police did not even register an FIR. What is the government trying to prove by releasing a list now?” the party asked.

Former Union minister and Congress leader Salman Khurshid tweeted, “Horrible people who hurt and killed a little girl in Hathras shame humanity. Shocked to think such people live amongst us and we do not spot their evil to prevent them harming innocent souls. What is the police doing? Hounding students and farmers?”
