KOLKATA: Rising Bengal shooting star Ayushi Podder faced some uncomfortable situations at the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport in the city here on Wednesday evening. The youngster, on way to rejoin the Gagan Narang Sports Promotion Foundation in Hyderabad for practice, was asked to offload some of her essential shooting equipment.
In spite of disclosing her identity as an India international shooter, the security staff at the airport refused to help her out. She was taken all the way to the check-in luggage counter where she was asked to remove the gun oil containers from her checked-in baggage. The girl from Bhadreswar, Hooghly, tried to convince the staff about their utility, but in vain. Finally she had to offload those cans.
“The oil is required for cleaning my gun and it is difficult to find those in India, especially the one I got from Germany,” she said. However, the airline she was taking tried to come to her rescue, but even they could not make the security people change their stand. The 20-year-old was a bit rattled since she had never faced such a situation in spite of travelling abroad too for different tournaments.
Podder had recently won two silver medals in the junior world championship in Lima, Peru, winning the medals in 50m rifle 3 position team and mixed team events. She was returning to her training base in Hyderabad after enjoying the Durga Puja break with the family. She will next take part in the national shooting meet which is scheduled to be held in Bhopal.
