The Atlanta Braves won the 2021 World Series. The Georgia Bulldogs stood atop the first 2021 College Football Playoff rankings.
Tuesday was a good night for sports teams in the state of Georgia. And that’s saying something, because, well, things haven’t exactly gone smoothly for teams around those parts for quite a while now.
The Braves, who defeated the Houston Astros, became champions of baseball for the first time since 1995 — and they’ve had plenty of chances. Entering this season, the Braves had gone 16 consecutive postseason appearances without winning the World Series — the longest drought in Major League Baseball history.
And that it was this team that ended the dry spell is hard to imagine, considering the Braves did not have a winning record until Aug. 6 and entered the postseason with 88 wins, the fewest of any team in these playoffs.
Houston entered this series as the favorite, meaning many Braves fans expected more heartbreak. Yes, we know, the Atlanta FC United won the 2018 MLS Cup. But … remember, the Braves lost four World Series in the 1990s. The Atlanta Dream have reached the WNBA Finals three times and never won. The Atlanta Falcons famously blew a 28-3 lead to the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LI, a game they ended up losing 34-28 in overtime. In the 2018 College Football Playoff, the Georgia Bulldogs, playing in Atlanta, lost to Alabama in overtime. The Bulldogs haven’t won a national championship since 1980.

But on Tuesday, the Braves held the trophy. And that wasn’t the only big win of the evening. The Bulldogs stood as the undisputed No. 1 team in college football, with No. 2 Alabama, No. 3 Michigan State and No. 4 Oregon all looking up at them.
The Bulldogs and Atlanta’s teams couldn’t help but congratulate the Braves.
Brought it home!

The @Braves have a true ace in Max Fried for a long, long time. After 1st inning struggle, he turned up his velocity, effectiveness and aggressiveness. He showed the Fried we were all expecting to see and it was beautiful to watch #WorldSeries
