Both the brothers hailed from Haryana and used to stay in Gomla village in Mahendragarh district with their late father’s buddy, Karim Bakhsh, on the time of the Partition.
Bakhsh migrated to Pakistan together with elder Gurdev Singh whereas youthful Daya Singh remained in Haryana together with his maternal uncle.

Muhammad Sharif, son of Gurdev, advised the media that through the years his father had written letters to the federal government of India to seek out the whereabouts of his brother Daya Singh.
