Halton residents turning 12 have been given a grace period for providing proof of vaccination at sports and recreation facilities.

Halton’s medical officer of health has amended her COVID-19 vaccination requirements for indoor sports and recreation to include a grace period for children turning 12.

The revised instructions from Dr. Hamidah Meghani indicate that youngsters will have 12 weeks from their 12th birthday to become fully vaccinated, and begin providing proof of the inoculations at that time when attending organized sports and recreational fitness activities. During the grace period, the children are still asked to provide identification.

The original instructions, issued last month, stipulate that proof of vaccination will be required by Nov. 26 for residents 12 and older who attend an indoor area of a sports or recreation facility for the purpose of actively participating, coaching, training, instructing, officiating or having similar involvement. Proof of vaccination or a valid medical exemption, along with identification, must be shown at the door each time they enter the facility.

“I recognize the importance of sports and recreational activities to physical and mental health for children of all ages,” said Meghani in her letter.

“Organized sports and recreational fitness activities nonetheless bring with them specific risks, including high exertion and close contact that can increase the risk of COVID-19 transmission. Halton Region has experienced sports-related outbreaks, and recent outbreaks across the province demonstrate that this potential remains of significant public health concern.”

Currently, Ontario’s vaccination rules exempt those under 18 who are participating in indoor organized sports.
