WEYMOUTH — South Shore Support Services will soon have access to technology that could assist people with cognitive disabilities and autism.

South Shore Support Services, a nonprofit that helps people with developmental disabilities, recently received a $50,000 grant from energy company Enbridge, which owns the natural gas compressor station in North Weymouth.

The funding will allow South Shore Support Services to purchase assistive technology that could improve the quality of life for people with developmental challenges.

The nonprofit plans to allow people and families to borrow and try out technology, such as smart medication dispensers, two-way audio-visual equipment, refrigerator cameras, doorbell technology and fall sensors. People and families can learn from staff how to use the equipment and borrow it to try at home.

Amy Pratt, the organization’s director of special projects, said many families aren’t familiar with the technology now available. She said the technology can offer people some independence while also ensuring they have the support they need.

“People don’t understand all the possibilities, so it’s a chance to get a feel for what is out there,” she said.

The funding will also help the organization open a smart respite apartment so individuals can stay overnight and use the technology with support from trained staff.

South Shore Support Services offers residential group homes, family support services, individual support services and other programs for people with developmental disabilities.
