OAKLAND CITY — There won’t be any Wood Memorial sports this week.

The Trojans have shutdown all sporting activities for both the high school and junior high school from Sept. 14 through Sept. 19 due to COVID-19 and mandated quarantining.

As of now, the earliest athletic conference the school may hold would be on Sept. 21, which would be a boys varsity tennis match at home against South Spencer at 4:30 p.m., and a varsity volleyball match at home against Eastern Greene High School beginning at 5:30 p.m.

PRINCETON — Princeton fell to Vincennes Lincoln in four sets (20-25, 18-25, 25-17, 14-25) on Thursday night.

Senior Reaghan Page was the top scorer for the Lady Tigers with 22 points, including 15 kills, six aces, 19 digs and a block. Junior Cortney Dove finished the night with nine points, five blocks and four kills. Senior Skylar Gasaway finished with 10 points, six kills and four blocks. Sophomore Albree Wallace followed with five kills.

They’ll return home on Monday against Forest Park at 7 p.m., followed by a match on Tuesday at Pike Central at 7 p.m.

FORT BRANCH — Led by their senior Evan Birch, the Gibson Southern boys tennis team swept South Spencer 5-0 on Thursday.

Birch led things off for the Titans by defeating South Spencer’s Trey Embry 6-1, 6-3.

Other matches of the afternoon included:

Bryce Simpson (GS) def. Jake Stuteville (SS) 6-3, 6-0; Eliott Church (GS) def. Dakota Allen (SS) 6-0, 6-0.

Isaac Merrell/Dawson Maurer (GS) def. Collin Lester/Cole Wheatley (SS) 6-0, 6-0; Logan McClain/Carson Brindle (GS) def. Noah Bunner/Kaydin Duvall (SS) 6-0, 6-1.

Oliver Hamilton (GS) def. Peyton Smith (SS) 6-0.

Their next match will be on Tuesday as they host Washington at 4:15 p.m.

PETERSBURG — Gibson Southern’s seventh and eighth graders left Pike Central with a pair of impressive victories on Thursday night.

The seventh grade group defeated Pike Central 36-0, while the eighth graders won handily as well, leaving Petersburg with a 41-0 victory.

For the seventh graders, Colin Scherer kicked things off by scoring from five yards out and giving the Jr. Titans a 6-0 lead. Gunner Alexander connected with Zach Foster on a a 21-yard pass play for touchdown, followed by Alexander running it in for the extra point. Late scores came virtue a six-yard run by Foster, and a 11-yard rushing score by Brayden Aldridge to put Gibson Southern ahead 30-0 at the half.

A Scherer six-yard rushing score in the second half proved to be the final score of the contest. Scherer led the defense with four tackles. Maverick Deputy also had four. Noah Ott and Brody Klem each had fumble recoveries.

In the 8th grade game the Jr. Titans won 41-0. Chase Thaxton scored from two yards out and Seth Parsons punched in the extra point. Beau Rose exploded for a 65-yard punt return touchdown for the Jr. Titans’ second score of the game. Next, Parsons connected with Cam Novotny on an 26-yard score to put the Jr. Titans ahead 28-0 at the half.

Connor Wirey kicked off the second half by dashing for a 23-yard score and Novotny kicked the extra point. Wirey added a second score on a 35-yard run. On defense Keegan Burek had six tackles, Kylin Eads had three.

With the victory the seventh graders advance to 2-0, while the eighth graders improve to 1-1. Next Thursday the seventh grade Jr. Titans host Memorial, followed by the 8th grade hosting Tell City.
