Gurgaon: The Tau Devi Lal Sports Complex may soon open its doors to residents of the city with the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) considering operating the facility along the lines of Delhi Development Authority’s (DDA) sports complexes from next year.
At present, only athletes have access to the facilities at the sports complex, which is provided on the basis of recommendations made by the relevant coach for their sport. According to officials, as a part of this new mode of operation, just as in DDA sports complexes, residents will also be able to use the Tau Devi Lal Sports Complex after payment of a fee or by seeking membership.
“A proposal was put before the Core Planning Cell (CPC) at the last meeting to run the Tau Devi Lal Sports Complex, which is located on 50 acres of land, along the lines of the DDA sports complex for optimum utilisation. However, the chief executive officer (CEO) directed that since the facilities at the sports complex are limited at present, we need to develop additional facilities first before opening it for citizens,” a senior GMDA official, who did not want to be named, said.
“More than 10 new facilities are in the pipeline, which will be developed within a year, after which we can begin operating along the lines of DDA sports complexes. We have prepared the Expression of Interest (EOI), which will be published in the paper and then tendering will be done. Within a year, these facilities will be developed at the sports complex,” said the official.
The Tau Devi Lal Sports Complex currently houses two international sports stadiums, one for cricket and another for football. Until 2008, high-level cricket matches were hosted at the cricket stadium while football matches were hosted till 2011. Since then, however, it has largely been used for local tournaments. The sports complex also has volleyball and basketball courts.
The additional facilities that will be developed in the coming year include a swimming pool, a shooting range, a handball ground, a football ground, a facility for lawn tennis, and a kho-kho ground. In addition, a skating rink will also be developed along with a yoga hall, an aerobics hall, and a jogging track. Facilities for taekwondo are also in the pipeline, officials said.
Apart from sporting facilities, officials said that the sports complex will also see a children’s park, nutrition centre, sports goods corner, cafeteria, and a juice corner.
“Once we develop these facilities and begin operating like the DDA, even regular people will be able to come to the sports complex and benefit from its infrastructure, instead of just athletes,” the official said.
