Burns leads PGA Tour event: Sam Burns made nine birdies in a 7-under par round of 65 to get to 15 under par through two rounds and lead the Safeway Open, the PGA Tour’s season-opening event in Napa, Calif. He had a total of 129. Harry Higgs was two strokes back after closing with an albatross for a 62. First-round leader Russell Knox (69), Cameron Percy (68) and D.J. Trahan (65) were 12 under. James Hahn (65) and Doug Ghim (66) were 11 under.

Guerrier leads in European golf event: Julien Guerrier shot a 5-under 66 to take a five-shot lead entering the weekend at the Portugal Masters, a European PGA Tour event in Vilamoura. The Frenchman was at 14 under at the tournament’s halfway point.

Allgaier wins auto race: Justin Allgaier caught front-running Justin Haley with 29 laps to go and held him off the rest of the way to win the NASCAR Xfinity race at Richmond (Va.) Raceway, giving him his second victory of the season. Kyle Busch finished third, followed by series points leader Austin Cindric and pole-sitter Ross Chastain. Michael Annett, who finished seventh, became the ninth driver to secure a spot in the series playoffs with two races remaining in the regular season.
