S. Williams loses to foe ranked 116th

Before Friday, Serena Williams had played 967 tour-level singles matches as a professional, with just four losses against opponents ranked outside the top 100 — and none in eight years. Well, it’s time to add to that list: Williams was beaten by No. 116 Shelby Rogers 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (5) in quarterfinals of the Top Seed Open in Lexington, Kentucky.

Rogers, who is from South Carolina, took six of the last eight points after trailing 3-1 in the tiebreaker to collect only her third career victory over a top-10 opponent. On Saturday in the semifinals, Rogers meets Jil Teichmann — who advanced with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over CiCi Bellis. The other semi pits Jennifer Brady, who beat Marie Bouzkova 6-1, 6-2, against 16-year-old Coco Gauff, who stopped Ons Jabeur 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.

Also in tennis: Top seed Simona Halep cruised past Magdalena Frech 6-2, 6-0 to advance to the semifinals of the Prague Open. She next faces Irina-Camelia Begu or Sara Sorribes Tormo in the semis. Their quarterfinal was suspended when Begu was leading 6-2, 0-1. Also, No. 3 seed Elise Mertens beat wild card Eugenie Bouchard 6-4, 1-6, 6-4. That sets up a semifinal match against Kristyna Pliskova, who advanced after Ana Bogdan retired because of a foot injury while leading 5-2. (AP)

MVC, OVC, MIAA postpone fall sports: The Missouri Valley Conference announced that it will postpone its conference schedules and championships in fall sports in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. The MVC previously said it would delay the start of seasons for men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball and men’s and women’s cross country and adopt conference-only schedules.
