Sports Rath: The season is halfway over, but COVID-19 is not done yet

Two games for the Petersburg Crimson Wave have been canceled due to COVID-19 and the season is reaching its peak with the Wave at a 2-1 record.

COVID-19 plagues all communities yet it has impacted Petersburg football a lot less than other programs like Hopewell and Meadowbrook High Schools. Those games were canceled due to COVID cases on their respective teams. PHS is not doing anything special to mitigate COVID-19 but somehow they are not impacted by COVID-19 like other schools and similarly, their momentum for the season is slowing down.

“Our players want to get tested every week,” said Petersburg Head Coach Mike Scott.

At all three schools, everyone is required to wear a mask indoors (with the exception of eating and drinking) and all the athletes get tested every week. Meadowbrook is part of Chesterfield County Schools and they say physical distancing is strongly encouraged, while in Hopewell and Petersburg it is required. But somehow, Petersburg’s football season seems to be going off like a regular football season.

If all or most of the protocols against COVID-19 are similar, shouldn’t all the schools be impacted the same way?

In a normal world, yes.

But in COVID-19 times anything is possible and by some miracle, the Crimson Wave can still practice and field a squad to play the 10-game season. With two games canceled, the Wave has a record of 2-1, and with the season halfway over it can hurt some progress the team can make.

Coach Scott wanted to play against Hopewell because it can be a challenge for the Wave as their schedule gets harder. Since their rivalry game did not happen, the Wave did not have the chance to challenge the powerhouse.

Meadowbrook was going to be another game where it was possible for PHS to show off their growth from the start of the season. A game where adjustments can lead to greater success, but that did not happen and the team gets better every game.

Against John Marshall, the team’s defense looked better “better than we were in the spring” Scott said. The secondary has remained strong throughout the season. They proved that against Booker T. Washington limiting the quarterback to a 15% completion rate.

At this point in the season, teams can be a bit more dynamic against the Wave, which will force the Wave to stay on their toes. But the Wave can’t be challenged if they don’t get to play other teams.

Games get canceled all the time for COVID-19 and it can limit the potential of a team. The Wave is ready for a challenge and should not finish the season playing against each other due to games being canceled and waiting to finally, play another game.

Everyone deserves to play the rest of the season, but it is up to everyone to do their job to mitigate the spread of COVID.
