It is an enormous second for Indian movies on the 2024 Sundance Film Festival! The two movies from India, the coming-of-age drama Girls Will Be Girls, and the documentary Nocturnes, which premiered on the competition, have been awarded by the respective worldwide jury on Friday on the Ray Theater in Park City, Utah. Girls Will Be Girls
Girls Will Be Girls, which is directed by Shuchi Talati, received two awards- The Audience Award within the World Cinema Dramatic class, and the Special Jury Award for Acting for its lead actor Preeti Panigrahi.
A coming-of-age story that takes place within the strict boarding college nestled within the Himalayas, Girls Will Be Girls revolves across the rocky relationship between sixteen year-old Mira (Preeti Panigrahi) and her mom Anila (Kani Kusruti). It marks the maiden manufacturing enterprise by actors Richa Chadha and Ali Fazal. Nocturnes
The second movie that marked its premiere on the competition was Anirban Dutta and Anupama Srinivasan’s Nocturnes. The documentary function movie received the World Cinema Documentary Special Jury Award for Craft.
The documentary revolves round a scientist and a neighborhood Himalayan resident observing and documenting the lives of hawk moths over months. An excerpt from the Hindustan Times review of the movie learn, “Nocturnes is intimate and expansive – breathtakingly vivid in its sensory, aural design. It plays with the perception of how one wants to explore what these moths want to say.”
The win for Nocturnes marks the fourth consecutive time that an Indian documentary has been awarded on the acclaimed competition, after Writing with Fire which received the Audience Award and Special Jury Award: Impact for Change in 2021; All That Breathes which received the Grand Jury Prize in 2022; and Against The Tide received the Special Jury Award for Vérité Filmmaking final yr.
