Texas began Big 12 play with a 2-0 record and have now jumped into the top 25 of many college football rankings.

The 32-27 win over TCU was enough to catapult the Longhorns eight spots in USA TODAY Sports’ re-rank this week. Steve Sarkisian’s squad landed at No. 23 overall and are one of three Big 12 programs listed among the top 25.

Oklahoma landed at No. 7, while undefeated Oklahoma State secured the No. 12 spot. Oddly enough, those are Texas’ next two opponents on the schedule.

The Red River Showdown between Texas-Oklahoma on Oct. 9 will likely shake up the rankings. If the Longhorns are able to escape Dallas with a win, they would instantly become the favorites to win the Big 12 and secure their first win over the Sooners since 2018.

This rivalry game will serve as a measuring stick to see how far the program has progressed under Sarkisian’s staff this season. Numerous five-star recruits will be in attendance for Texas as they’re the home team this year, and the recruiting implications are arguably just as big as the game itself.
